Tsuchizaki Port, Akita City. The Tsuchizaki Hikiyama Festival has been passed down for over 300 years since the Edo period. Designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset of Japan, this Shinto ritual features warrior-adorned floats parading through the town — a living expression of the community’s bond and collective prayer. In 1945, Tsuchizaki was among the last places in Japan to suffer an air raid. And still, through this festival, the people have found ways to face what was lost — and continue shaping tomorrow. This is a record of those who cherish, protect, and carry the spirit of the festival into the future.
